COMMUNITY BASED
SCHOOL TO WORK PROGRAM
Community Based School to Work Program:
The Community Based School to Work Program (“STW”) is a supported work-based learning program for students to help establish a link between school and the workplace.
The program provides students with a hands-on opportunity to experience and work in occupations and/or careers that may be of interest to them and that will help them learn more about the working world.
During the program, students are given the chance to apply knowledge they learn in school in a practical fashion in workplace settings. The workplace learnings are partnered with academic content to help develop each student's understanding of the experiences he/she encounters.
Through a combination of their academic content and their work experiences, students are able to formulate relationships with adult role-models from within the business community to instill, reinforce and demonstrate successful employment characteristics and the importance of behaviors such as: a positive attitude, integrity and ethics, human relations, teamwork, timeliness, good study habits, personal hygiene, appropriate workplace attire and other positive adult traits. In addition, it will help students develop skills and behaviors that will help them integrate their role within the workplace and their community.
The program is structured to provide students with opportunities to build their independence within the workplace through progressive development of experiences. Typically students will begin the program with Internal STW Placements at Guilderland High School and then move out into Community Based STW placements to continue to build their skills.
