Most people need some preparation before they’re ready for a career and/or the workforce. Planning for a job or career should begin long before you start working. Developing a plan could include taking technical courses during high school or, after graduating, attending a college or university to earn a certificate or a degree, as well as developing your knowledge and awareness of the skills required for success in the workplace.
Knowing what type of career preparation you need begins with thinking about what type of career or job you want.
To increase student achievement and prepare students for life-long success, it is recommended that students begin their career development process in the elementary grades with a basic introduction to careers and jobs in their communities. It is most beneficial for students to continue this exploration throughout middle and high school, and proceed by deepening their knowledge during post-secondary education. The career development process includes awareness, exploration, preparation, application and culminates in life-long learning and career management.
At Guilderland High School we help students continue on their life-long career journey through a combination of Career Exploration and Education programs that will help them navigate a path to success. Our Work-based Learning Programs introduced below are geared towards guiding our students to a rewarding future that meets their individual strengths and goals.

Work-Based Learning (WBL):
Work-based learning (WBL) is the “umbrella” term that identifies activities which collaboratively engage employers and schools in providing structured learning experiences for students. These experiences focus on assisting students in developing broad, transferable skills for postsecondary education and the workplace. A quality WBL program can make school-based learning more relevant by providing students with the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to real world situations.
Work-based learning is supported in both the school and at the worksite. While school-based learning focuses on academic and career and technical preparation as part of the classroom curriculum, worksite learning occurs, away from school, in a business or community organization.
Work-Based Learning (WBL) and Career Exploration provide students with opportunities for instruction in both academic and occupational skills, career exploration, and guidance in identifying employment and educational goals. Students have the opportunity to connect what they learn in school with work-site application to enable a smooth transition into the work force and/or education beyond high school.
Work Based Learning Programs are an exciting learning approach for high school students. They will take you out of the classroom and give you an insider’s look at what it is like to work in a particular field. The programs place students in many and varied types of working environments. The purpose of the following programs is to give students a directed transition to their next level of workplace and professional development. The overall goal is to help students make informed decisions about future career choices and provide students with a solid awareness of job and/or career preparation, as well as provide students will skills that will benefit them in the working world and provide solid credentials to include on college applications.
